Barrister Yomi Ogunwale Urges Osun State Residents to Shun Gender-Based Violence, Condemns FGM on Human Rights Day

Renowned legal icon Barrister Yomi Ogunwale has called on residents of Osun State to take a firm stand against gender-based violence (GBV) and the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as the world marks Human Rights Day today.

Speaking at an event commemorating the global celebration, Barrister Ogunwale emphasized the need for collective action to combat these societal ills. He highlighted the devastating impact of GBV and FGM on victims, particularly women and girls, and stressed that such practices are not only inhumane but also violations of fundamental human rights.

“Gender-based violence and Female Genital Mutilation are grave violations of human rights and dignity. These practices have no place in any society, especially one that values justice and equality. I urge all residents of Osun State to reject and report any form of violence or abuse. Your body is your right, and no one has the authority to infringe on it,” he said.

The legal expert also encouraged victims of abuse to speak out and seek justice. “Silence empowers perpetrators. If you are abused, please speak up. The law is here to protect you, and there are mechanisms in place to ensure justice is served. Everyone must know their rights and take a stand to defend them,” he added.

Barrister Ogunwale further called on community leaders, parents, and stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns against FGM and other harmful cultural practices. He appealed to the government and law enforcement agencies to strengthen enforcement of laws protecting the rights of women and children.

Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, is a reminder of the universal principles of equality, dignity, and freedom. Barrister Ogunwale’s message is a timely call to action for Osun State residents to uphold these values and work towards a violence-free society.
